Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, this circulating commemorative 20 cent coin was released in 2013 to mark the 100th anniversary of Canberra, the capital city of Australia, which was officially named in 1913.
The coin honours the city’s foundation and design, particularly the visionary urban plan created by Walter Burley Griffin, which is reflected in the reverse artwork.
The obverse shows the crowned mature head of Queen Elizabeth II facing right (her effigy known as the “Fourth Portrait”). The Queen wears the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland” diamond tiara, a wedding gift from Queen Mary (Her Majesty’s grandmother) in 1947 – which she also has on the Machin and the Gottwald portraits.
